Some voters said they agree with El-Sayed on issues such as rising living costs and the need for stronger opposition to President Donald Trump. However, many Black voters continue to support his opponent, Representative Haley Stevens, because of her long relationship with local communities and her record of meeting with residents.
El-Sayed told supporters that recent campaign advertisements against him do not accurately represent his views. He also repeated his call for reducing the role of large political donors in elections.
The Michigan Democratic primary has become an important contest, with many political observers watching whether progressive candidates can gain broader support. Black voters are expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the race.
